"I is for Ida who drowned in a lake."

There's been almost no practice for a week and it sadly shows. Still at our last class we got the capitals. Yay!

Practice lettering - Gorey7 (27 January, 2010)

Santa Monica, CA  27 January 2010

"G is for George smothered under a rug."

I decided to mess around with capitals, but we haven't done them yet in class -- these "G"s are based on the Gothic capitals out of a book. The letters are closer together as that's part of what we practiced in class this week.

Clearly it needs more work.

Practice lettering - Gorey4 (22 January, 2010)

Santa Monica, CA  23 January 2010

"D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh."

The 35 degree angle came a bit easier today, maybe because I did a practice sheet before I started the lettering. I used the alternative "s" and found it a bit easier. Clearly I don't know how to do the numbers.

The nib angle was a little easier today. I'm still struggling with the "a" and "s" and my letter spacing is a struggle.

"B is for Basil assaulted by bears."

I'm finding keeping the nib at 30 degrees while also forming the letters quite a challenge. The letters "s" and "a" are really hard for me, so of course I've chosen something with tons of both.

Home calligraphy space

Home calligraphy space

Santa Monica, CA  16 January 2010

This is the snug little space I've carved out of a corner of our bedroom for lettering. The bookcase is new, but everything else was already there, just needed to be tidied and re-arranged.

Having a space where I can just sit down and start makes a huge difference when it's already evening and I'm trying to decide whether or not to practice calligraphy for the day.

It's not a great photo, but the only one I have just now.
